Wedding Ceremony Venues...
In 1994, the Marriage Act changed the wedding market forever, granting licences for civil marriages to venues as disparate as Manchester United's Old Trafford football stadium, Blenheim Palace and the London Eye. It opened up choice for couples who previously would have had to opt for either a church or register office ceremony.
Now there are two basic choices: -
Religious Wedding Ceremony – A religious wedding can take place at: -
- A church
- A chapel
- Or other registered religious building
Civil Wedding Ceremony - You can have a civil ceremony or civil partnership at: -
- A register office
- Any venue approved by the local council - eg a stately home or hotel
- Any religious premises where permission has been given by the organisation and the premises approved by the local authority
Although the purist will always lean towards the traditional religious ceremony, the glamour and glitz of alternative civil wedding venues evolves which may be the reason why civil weddings accounted for 70% of marriages in 2011.
